DIY Tissue Paper Tulip Garden to make with kids

When we visited a friend’s house the other day and saw that they had fresh tulips in a vase I just stopped and stared at it in awe, and even let out a deep sigh because it was SO nice and refreshing to see. Like, it was REALLY, really nice.

You see, we’ve been having an odd winter. We’ve been getting so much snow so late in the season, it’s starting to drive us a bit crazy. Don’t get me wrong- we do love the different seasons that our area provides us, and it’s so much fun playing with all the snow, but when it’s mid march and we still have snow days which continue to mess with your schedule quite often, it makes you wonder and say “hellooo…? what’s happening here?”.  My husband Josh would have to take our only car with AWD to work these days, and we’ve been stuck at home a lot and this is making us long for spring, sunshine, and the pretty colors.

So even though I knew it was store bought, the tulips were so nice to see. And when my daughter Mae asked to have some craft time, I suggested making tulips!

This turned out to be a fun and easy project with plenty for a 4 year old to do such as painting, gluing, and cutting, so I decided it’s worth sharing for anyone out there looking for a spring project for your kids

Materials

  • Lollipop sticks
  • Tissue paper (we used ones we saved from gifts) Any colors you like, and some green for the grass)
  • Glue & Glue Gun
  • Scissors
  • Green Paint
  • Green card stock
  • Another card stock for the planter (I used a A7 blank card – 10″ x  7″ unfolded)

Steps

  1. Trace out tulip petals onto tissue papers, and cut 4 or 5 of them per flower. You can use this guide here if you like : PETALS
  2. Crumple up some left over tissue paper and make into a ball. This will be the core to your tulip.
  3. Wrap each cut up petal pieces around the ball you just made, gluing them onto the ball, shaping it to look like a tulip. You’ll need to layer this 4-5 times to make it look like a fuller tulip.
  4. Color the popsicle stick green
  5. draw out and cut out the leaves.
  6. Glue the pieces together to form a tulip using a hot glue gun
  7. If you like, You can make a planter box by scoring 1.5″ around all sides of a paper and folding, gluing it up like so (I used a blank A7 card (10″ x 7″ when open)
  8. Use glue gun to put in some grass, and “plant” the tulips, securing it with glue gun.
  9. And there you have it!
